Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 stage musical adaptation of the book put more of an emphasis on romance, and turned Erik from a cellar goblin who speaks in third person half the time, into a hypnotic smooth-talker in a glittery cape and a suit. While there are some romantic elements in the 1909 serialization, the original is mostly a ghost story/murder mystery. Christine agrees to his terms and, of her own volition, kisses Erik's disfigured face, which causes him to have a change of heart, and he lets her go. Ultimately, Erik kidnaps Christine and threatens to murder Raoul unless Christine agrees to marry Erik. He falls in love with (read: becomes obsessed with) the ballet dancer Christine Daae and, over the course of the story gives her singing lessons, threatens the theatre managers until they give her the best operatic roles, and harasses Christine's love interest Raoul. 2.3 Chaoslord/Twisted Freaking Cycle PathĮrik is a disfigured musical genius who lives in the cellars of the Palais Garnier opera house in 1881. ![]()
